Firearms smuggling along Kelantan/Thai border under control

KOTA BARU: Firearms are still being smuggled into Kelantan by those involved in drug trafficking and other illegal activities, said Kelantan acting police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun.

However, he added, the situation remained under control.

This year, four firearms were seized by the state police, he said.

"Kelantan police have seized two pistols and two revolvers in separate operations between January and August this year.

"The firearms were believed to have been used in drug activities," he said after attending a Merdeka Day countdown organised by the state police contingent here, last night.

He said initial investigations showed that the firearms were obtained from a neighbouring country.

"With the help of counterparts in the neighbouring country, we will continue to crack down on the suppliers.

"Kelantan police will also continue to exchange information with their neighbouring counterparts on cross-border activities from time to time," he added.

Last year, he said the state police seized seven firearms, including three shotguns and a revolver, in a series of operations statewide.

He added that all the border agencies, including the General Operations Force, had been told to beef up their operations on firearms and other smuggling activities.
