KOTA KINABALU: A self-employed man who assaulted his wife requested for a jail sentence as he had no money to pay a fine.
Mohd Saidun Abdul Razak, 43, told magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles that he had no means to pay a fine should the court decide to impose one on him.
Saidun was sentenced to six months' jail after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his 43-year-old wife on Sept 15 at 2pm at a house in Taman Mei Lok, Luyang.
The court heard that the accused punched his wife in the face and kicked her leg. The victim who has a heart problem blacked out and also suffered injuries on her face.
Police investigations found that the victim and her family who tested positive for Covid-19 underwent home quarantine from Sept 13 until Sept 20.
During the quarantine period, on Sept 15, the accused went on a rampage because his 17-year-old son did not give him a proper body massage.
The accused then punched his son's face and attacked the wife who was present at the time.
The wife lodged a police report about the incident on Sept 22 which led to the accused's arrest.
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
