Bus driver arrested for reckless driving

KUALA KRAI: An express bus driver was arrested for driving recklessly under Op Selamat at kilometre 74 of Jalan Kota Baru-Gua Musang, here, last night.

The driver in his 60s was detained by Kuala Krai District Police Headquarters (IPD) Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Division (BSPT) personnel at 11pm.

Kuala Krai District Deputy Chief of Police, Deputy Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun said his department acted after receiving a report from a road user passing through the Laloh area.

He said the express bus from Kuala Lumpur headed to Kota Baru crossed a double line causing the car driven by the complainant coming from the opposite direction to skid and almost crash into another vehicle while trying to avoid it.

"The complainant then obtained the registration number of the express bus and made a report at the nearest police station.

"Upon receiving the report, BSPT members managed to locate and arrest the bus driver at 11pm.

"The bus driver was then taken to BSPT IPD Kuala Krai for further investigation under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"If convicted, he can be jailed for not more than five years and fined not less than RM5,000 or not more than RM15,000," he said in a statement, here.

In a related development, Kamarulzaman said, his department also issued a total of 198 summonses to drivers for various offences in Op Selamat which was held from Jan 18 until today.

He said one of the primary offences is driving in the emergency lane; cutting across double lines, queue-cutting, running a red light, using a phone while driving and driving over the speed limit.
