Three-month old baby dies after babysitter finds infant unconscious

KAJANG: A three-month-old baby died at a childcare centre at Section 15, Bandar Baru Bangi, here this afternoon.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaid Hassan said police received a phone call at 12.10pm from a nurse at An-Nur Specialist Hospital in Bandar Baru Bangi about an unconscious baby brought in by a babysitter.

He said the baby was given first aid but failed to respond to treatment at the specialist centre.

"The doctor at the medical centre tried giving emergency treatment to the baby but there was no response and the infant was later confirmed dead at the hospital, " he said.

He said initial investigation found that the baby was fine when the mother sent the infant to the daycare center at 7.15am. However, at about 10.30am when the babysitter went to check on the infant, he was not conscious," Zaid said.

He said preliminary checks for injuries on the baby's body was also negative.

"The baby's body has been sent to the Serdang Hospital Forensic Department for an autopsy, to determine the exact cause of death," Zaid said in a brief press statement tonight.

He added that the daycare centre has been operating since 2014 and had a valid license from the Selangor Social Welfare Department.

" We didn't find any element of violence or foul play at the scene buy do not rule out the possibility of negligence.

Investigations are being carried out to determine whether there was negligence on the babysitter's part that may have led to his demise. Investigations are still ongoing, " he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001, which if convicted can be fined not exceeding RM20,000 or maximum imprisonment of 10 years, or both.
