Ex-cop jailed two years, fined RM10,000 for accidentally killing colleague

SIBU: A former policeman was sentenced to two years in jail and fined RM10,000 by the High Court here today for negligence leading to the death of his colleague two years ago.

Judge Datuk Christopher Chin Soo Yin sentenced Mohamad Nur Alif Mazlan, 27, after finding him guilty according to Section 304A of the Penal Code.

He also ordered the accused to begin his sentence from the date he was arrested, on May 6, 2021.

Seventeen witnesses were called throughout the trial of the case. The accused was represented by lawyer Ranbir Singh while prosecution was carried out by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Kenneth Netto.

According to the charge, the accused was claimed to have caused the death of colleague Norhalim Tumiran, 25, at a rented house in Permai here from between 5.45pm and 6.30pm on May 6, 2021.

When the incident took place, the accused, who hails from Negri Sembilan, had stopped at the victim's rented house to eat together, and while waiting to eat, the victim and another colleague known as Amirulizwan Sulaiman were playing a video game in the hall.

Not long after that, Amirulizwan saw the accused come out from a room with a gun when he suddenly heard a gun shot before realising and seeing the victim lying down with his head bleeding.

In the statement, he informed that the accused did not realise that the gun was loaded.
