Sibu woman loses RM45,000 to online job scam

SIBU: A 34-year old woman here lost RM45,049 to an online job scam that she found on Facebook and Instagram.

Sibu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili today said the victim, an employee of a private company, claimed to have seen a job advertisement on Facebook and Instagram last Wednesday and called a phone number on the ad.

He said the victim was asked to register her personal and banking details on a website to get the job and was told to make payments amounting to RM45,049 to seven bank accounts to get commissions for goods ordered under her name.

He advised the public not to be deceived by advertisements on social media that offer lucrative returns.

He said job seekers should check the validity of a company or agency at the nearest police station, on semakmule.rmp.gov.my, through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department infoline at 013-2111 222, the Commercial Crime Investigation Department response centre at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599, police's Cyber Crime Alert Facebook page or the National Scam Response Centre at 997.
