Fahmi considering lawsuit over alleged slander of political speech at Masjid Nurul Yaqin

PUTRAJAYA: Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil is contemplating filing a lawsuit against those who slandered his alleged political speech at Masjid Nurul Yaqin, Kampung Melayu Seri Kundang, Rawang.

"I am considering filing a defamation suit against the quarters who had spread such slander as I did not talk about political issues or anything regarding the state elections as I was only invited by the mosque congregants to speak about the banning of The 1975 band and the cancellation of The Good Vibes Festival.

"I regret and condemn the action of some parties who had tried to politicise this issue and spread slander," he said at a press conference after delivering his keynote speech at the Public Sector Day by Amazon Web Service and GovInsider here, today.

Fahmi who is also the Lembah Pantai member of parliament also stated his readiness to cooperate with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) should he be called upon by them.

"Currently, as far as I have checked, I have not been called in by JAIS just yet, but if I am, InsyaAllah I am ready to give my cooperation."

He also thanked a member of the mosque committee who had uploaded a full video about the incident to shed light on the matter.

Earlier on July 30, a picture of Fahmi delivering a speech in a mosque went viral, with the caption claiming he was delivering a political speech. However, Fahmi later clarified that he was merely answering the kariah's question about The 1975 group.

He also clarified that he had only stopped at the mosque to perform Zohor prayers because it was the closest mosque to the location of his next programme.

The viral photo later prompted an investigation by JAIS following a complaint that was lodged regarding Fahmi's speech.

Its director, Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, yesterday said JAIS had summoned the nazir of the mosque to obtain evidence to assist the investigation in accordance with Section 12 of the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Selangor) 1995 over suspicion of insulting religious authorities.

"Further action will be taken after the investigation is completed.

"JAIS would like to remind all candidates and parties contesting (in the state elections) to be careful when in and around mosques and suraus to avoid any behaviour that may lead to violating the order of the Sultan of Selangor and the rulings of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS)," he said.
