Man at home for mentally disabled charged with murder of fellow resident

IPOH: A resident of a care home for the mentally disabled was today charged in the magistrate's court here with murdering another resident.

Lai Mun Kong, 50, nodded in understanding as the charge was read before Magistrate Jesseca Daimis.

He is accused of murdering Lim Han Tong, 42, between 6am and 6.50am in a toilet at the care home in Batu 9 1/2, Jalan Jelapang, Chemor here on Aug 24.

No plea was recorded before the court fixed Sept 29 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Aqilah Syaza Ariffin prosecuted, while the accused was not represented.

Yesterday, Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Yahaya Hassan said police had been informed about the resident who was killed in a fight at the care home.

"There are 92 residents at the care home and only eight workers looking after them. The man was found unconscious in a toilet.

"Based on witness interviews, all residents had gone to the canteen at 6am to have their breakfast, except for the accused and the victim.

"A witness heard a loud noise from the toilet. When he went to check, he saw the man standing over the victim. This prompted the witness to inform the workers of the care home," he said.

Yahaya added that a post-mortem conducted at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here revealed that the cause of the death was head injury due to blunt force trauma.
