Changlun e-hailing driver charged with transporting smuggled migrants

ALOR STAR: A 60-year-old e-hailing car driver was charged at the Sessions Court here today with transporting five smuggled migrants in Changlun last month.

Mohd Aseri Musa, who was clad in a red round-neck T-shirt, nodded and affirmed that he understood the charge when it was read before judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah.

He was charged with transporting the Myanmar migrants, aged between 5 and 37, in a car near Taman Hosba in Changlun, Kubang Pasu, about 5pm on Sept 20.

The charge was framed under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act which carries a jail term of up to five years or a maximum fine of RM250,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nor Syaliati Mohd Sobri prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Muhamad Samsul Nizam Solimi.

The court did not offer bail to the accused as the case falls under the purview of the High Court.

The court then fixed Nov 8 for mention pending deposition of the five migrants.
