KUALA LUMPUR: Kean Wong, the author of a controversial book whose cover featured an insultingly altered version of the nation's coat of arms, has been released while police investigations continue.
Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said he was released after the remand order expired today.
"Police will continue to investigate the case," he said in a statement today.
Shuhaily said Wong was detailed while renewing his passport at the Kelana Jaya Immigration Department yesterday.
"He was detained over the publication of his 'Rebirth: Reformasi, Resistance, And Hope in New Malaysia' book which had been banned under the Printing Presses and Publications (Control of Undesirable Publications) Order 2020 in July that year".
Mohd Suhaily said the investigation was centred on the book's cover which depicted a modified national emblem.
He too reminded the public not to make any unnecessary speculation which could jeopardise the ongoing police investigations.
Mohd Suhaily said the case was being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, Section 8(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act by the Bukit Aman classified crimes investigation unit.
