Assistant medical officer claims trial over 12 counts of bribery

KUANTAN: A 57-year-old assistant medical officer has been slapped with 12 charges of receiving bribes amounting to RM3,350 involving works related to funeral arrangements between April 2021 and last year.

Moh Roffi Ab Rahman, who works in the forensic unit of Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court after the charges were read to him by the court interpreter before judge Datuk Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain.

The father-of-five was charged with receiving cash ranging between RM100 and RM800 from two individuals he knew had connections with his official duties in managing corpses on 12 occasions.

He was alleged to have received the cash deposited by the duo through online transfer on 12 occasions between April 8, 2021 and March 3 last year.

The offences of bribery in relation to public servants under Section 165 of the Penal Code, are punishable with a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Kamariah Seman proposed RM10,000 bail with one surety.

In mitigation, lawyer Shahidah Muslimah Roslan, representing Moh Roffi, mentioned that her client had two children, one of whom died due to cancer on March 4 of this year.

"His other child has a heart problem and is receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute. A lot of money has been spent for their medical treatment.

"My client earns RM2,500 and the money is used to manage his household expenditures especially these days when the prices of goods have increased. I plead the court to impose a low bail amount of RM3,000 along with other conditions," she said.

Ahmad Zamzani set bail at RM7,000 with one surety and told the accused to surrender his passport to the court until the case is over.
