Retiree loses RM127,560 to scammers posing as courier company staff and policemen

IPOH: A 61-year-old retiree lost RM127,560 after she was duped by scammers impersonating a courier company staff and policemen.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that the woman, who hails from Kampung Sungai Tapah Tambahan here, lodged a police report yesterday.

Mohd Yusri said that initial investigation found that the victim had received a phone call on Sept 25, from an unknown individual who introduced himself as a courier company staff who claimed that the woman had a defective package.

"The victim's phone call was then transferred to the headquarters of the Penang Police Contingent, where she spoke with officers of the ranks of Inspector and Sergeant, who demanded to see the front of her bank card.

"The victim only realised that she was duped by scammers after her daughter checked her phone. The victim had performed three transactions to three different accounts between Oct 9 and 10," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Mohd Yusri advised people to be wary of such scam calls.
