Jobless Perlis man claims trial to firearm possesion and drug trafficking

KANGAR: A jobless man today claimed trial at Sessions court here to two charges for firearm and live ammunition possession at a rubber estate in Padang Besar last month.

Muhammad Hafizi Seman, 22, from Kampung Kebun, Padang Besar pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before judge Musyiri Peet.

According to the first charge, he was possession of a Baretta PX4 Storm pistol in a rubber estate in Kampung Kolam, Padang Besar about 12.10pm on Oct 26.

The charge was framed under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalty) 1971 which carries up to 14 years' imprisonment and six strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

Hafizi also claimed trial to a separate charge of possessing 50 rounds of 9mm live bullets at the same location, time and date.

The second charge was framed under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960. He is liable to face a jail term of up to seven years or a fine of not more than RM10,000 or both, if found guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Poad prosecuted while Hafizi was unrepresented.

The court fixed Dec 12 for mention to allow the accused to appoint a lawyer.

Hafizi was also later charged at the magistrate's court here for trafficking 70kg of cannabis.

He nodded when the charge was read before magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor, but no plea was recorded.

According to the charge, he committed the offence in a rubber estate in Kampung Kolam, Padang Besar at about 12.15pm on Oct 26.

The charge is under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or a lifetime imprisonment and is also liable to at least 12 stroke of the rotan.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Atikah Ab Rashid prosecuted for this case, and Hafizi was also unrepresented for this case today.

The court subsequently fixed Feb 16 next year for mention pending a chemist report.

On Nov 1, Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim had said it had crippled a drugs trafficking activity along the Malaysia-Thailand border after seizing 70 blocks of compressed cannabis with a street value of RM217,000 following the arrest four men in Padang Besar.

He had said that police also seized a firearm and 50 rounds of live ammunition from the suspects.
