'Lesen terbang': Sabah MACC nabs middleman

KAJANG: Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested one more suspect in its probe into RM300,000 bribery related to the issuance of illegal driving licences or 'lesen terbang'.

Sources said the suspect, in his 40s, was arrested at the Lahad Datu MACC office when he was called up to record his statement today.

MACC believed the suspect acted as a middleman to the law enforcement officers detained yesterday in relation to the case.

"The suspect, a foreigner, is believed to have committed the offence between 2021 and 2022. He allegedly acted as the agent-cum-middleman for the licence issuing syndicate that allowed drivers to get their licence without having to take a test.

"The modus operandi carried out include requesting and accepting bribes of between RM400 and RM1,200 from candidates looking for driving licence without undergoing a driving test," the source said.

The source said the illegal 'lesen terbang' issuance syndicate has caused the government to lose approximately RM1.5 million in revenue.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy when contacted confirmed the arrest of the fifth suspect and said the case is investigated under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

He said the suspect will be brought for remand at the Lahad Datu magistrate's court tomorrow morning.

Earlier today, Sabah MACC obtained remand orders for four enforcement officers to facilitate investigations into the case.
