Former civil servant charged with soliciting RM2,300 bribe

KUALA LUMPUR: A 42-year-old former civil servant was charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court with soliciting a RM2,300 bribe as inducement to obtain an item which was put up for auction by a local authority last year.

Murugan Muniyandy, who is a former staff at the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge in front of judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud today.

The charge stated that he deceived Gnanam Govindasamy to hand over RM2,300 as inducement to obtain an auctioned item from the MPS. He committed the act at a restaurant in Jalan Selayang Segar 1, Taman Selayang Segar here on April 4 last year.

The charge was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Mohd Aliff Shaharuzaman prosecuted. Murugan was unrepresented.

The court set bail at RM5,000 with one surety, and imposed conditions for Murugan's international passports to be witheld and for him to report to the nearest MACC office in the first week of every month.

The court also said he was prohibited from contacting any prosecution witnesses except for the investigating Officer (IO) in the case for official purposes.

Case management has been fixed for Jan 15 next year.
