Contraband firecrackers and liquor confiscated in Bakri-factory raid

MUAR: Police confiscated RM83,550 worth of contraband firecrackers with the arrest of a 40-year-old man during a factory raid at Bakri, here, last week.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the suspect was arrested for storing firecrackers believed meant for sales during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations without a valid permit.

The case is investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Substances Act 1957, which is punishable with a maximum seven-year imprisonment term, or fine up to RM10,000, or both.

Meanwhile in another raid factory-raid at Jeram Bukit Batu, Bakri, here on Dec 13, about RM160,000 worth of unpaid duties liquor were confiscated including 200 litres of liquid suspected to be alcohol essence.

Police also arrested two men, both aged 31, suspected of smuggling the untaxed liquor.

Raiz Mukhliz said the 3pm raid saw the seizure of 451 boxes labelled as Knight General, valued at RM129,888 without taxes, and the bags of suspected alcohol essence valued at RM26,000.

Two lorries, believed used to ferry the contraband were also seized.

The case is investigated under Section 135 (1) (D) of the Customs Act 1967, which stipulates a fine worth ten times the value of the contraband, and a maximum five-year imprisonment-term.
