Woman accepts prison sentence, says it was carelessness on her part

BENTONG: "I accept this prison sentence because I was the one who was careless and didn't act when my husband hit our son," said Asmah.

The 30-year-old said her husband had been beating their seven-year-old son for a month until he passed away.

Asmah was sentenced to three years in Bentong Prison for conspiring to cause her son's death.

"I regret my actions but everything has already happened.

"As a mother, I should have paid more attention to my late child. However, I focused more on work to the point of neglecting my responsibilities as a mother.

"Due to that negligence, the court sentenced me to six years in prison for conspiring to cause the death of my own son," she said when met at Bentong Prison, yesterday.

She said her husband, who is from Negri Sembilan, is still in remand at the Bentong Prison, awaiting trial on charges of murder.

Asmah said before the incident, her son was raised by her mother with lots of love.

When he was seven years old, she and her husband decided to take over raising their son after her mother passed away.

She said her son's spoiled nature, his lack of a bond with his father and her husband's hot-tempered nature were factors that might have led to him hitting the child.

"He only lived with us for a month, and then he was gone forever," she said.

According to her, at the time of the incident, her husband was not working while she was taking care of their son at home.

"I have now served a prison sentence of three years and five months in Bentong Prison.

"Apart from religious classes, I attended sewing skills training. I am now able to produce women's and men's clothing as well as various accessories, including home decorations.

"I can't wait to be free and start a new life with my father and another child who is growing up. I am confident that God will help me continue my life in the future."

Asmah said it is impossible for her to wait for her husband's release because the prison sentence he will receive, which is between 30 and 40 years, involves charges of murder, including drug addiction.
