Online clothes seller fined RM3,000 for possession of pornographic materials

KUALA LUMPUR: A 32-year-old online clothes seller was fined RM3,000 by the magistrate's court today for possessing pornographic materials on his electronic devices.

Magistrate Wong Chai Sia meted out the sentence on accused Wong Yi Hang after he pleaded guilty to having pornographic pictures on a laptop and eight handphones.

He committed the offence at a condominium at Taman Kobena, Cheras at about 4.30pm on May 22.

The offence under Section 292 of the Penal Code carries a maximum of three years in jail or a fine or both.

The court also ordered the accused to be jailed three months if he failed to pay the fine.

He settled the fine.

During proceedings, prosecuting officer Assistant Superintendent Nom Phot Prackdit asked the court to impose a fair punishment to serve as a lesson to the accused.

Defence counsel Ashraf Fahmi Abdul Aziz, who stood for Yi Hang, asked for a minimum fine as it was his client's first offence.

He said his client is unmarried and supporting his parents.

"The pornographic materials were meant for his personal use and not for sale," he said.
