Nationwide sweep: Police tight-lipped on locations as more 'Mini Dhaka' areas come to light

KOTA BARU: Police have identified more "Mini Dhaka" areas in the country.

Federal Police Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali confirmed this today, but declined to disclose the areas.

"We have identified other hotspots (of illegal immigrants) and will soon raid these places. But I cannot disclose the locations as they are a secret.

"At the moment, we have to put our operations on hold in a few states like Johor and Pahang due to the floods. In other states, the operations will continue, including in Kelantan," he said.

Hazani said police are intensifying efforts to arrest illegal immigrants across the country, including in Kelantan, adding that the raids would be conducted regularly, both during the day and at night.

After the resounding success of the initial "Mini Dhaka" raid in Jalan Silang, Kuala Lumpur, last month, he said police could see a noticeable restlessness among illegal immigrants.

Reflecting on the impact of the Jalan Silang operation, he said: "The raid in Jalan Silang has caused panic among foreigners, and for us, the raid's success relies on the commitment of all involved agencies and the ongoing information provided by the public."

On Dec 21, a massive operation commenced at 11am in Jalan Silang, with about 60 premises in that location and around Kota Raya Complex being inspected, resulting in the detention of 1,101 foreigners for checks.

Kelantan's 'Mini Dhaka' operation was carried out in Kota Baru, including at Jalan Hilir Pasar and Jalan Dato Pati on Jan 5 which saw four children among nearly 300 undocumented foreigners being arrested.

A check at Jalan Dato Pati showed that many foreigners continue to visit several sundry shops and a wet market in the area today, a week after the raid.

Meanwhile, a state Immigration Department spokesman said it had deployed several plainclothes officers to monitor the area and conduct routine checks on the foreigners.
