Syed Saddiq ropes in former solicitor-general to lead his appeal

PUTRAJAYA: Former Solicitor-General II of Malaysia Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abidin will represent Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman in his appeal to set aside the jail sentence and conviction for corruption.

Syed Saddiq's lawyer Lim Wei Jiet confirmed this when contacted today.

Mohd Yusof will be assisted by prominent lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik who was the lead counsel in Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's corruption trial.

Mohd Yusof previously led the prosecution team in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy 2 trial.

He subsequently resigned after the sodomy case.

The senior lawyer was also briefly a counsel in former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's corruption trial for misappropriating funds belonging to SRC International Bhd.

However, he withdrew from representing Najib in 2018.

Syed Saddiq is appealing to set aside seven years' jail, two strokes of the cane, and a fine of RM10 million for charges of abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property and two counts of money laundering.

The Muar member of parliament was left without a lead counsel when Gobind Singh Deo was appointed as a minister last year.

Gobind makes a return to the cabinet as the digital minister during the cabinet reshuffle announced by Anwar in December last year.

The Damansara member of parliament was previously the communications and multimedia minister in the Pakatan Harapan administration from 2018 to 2020.
