'Mentega Terbang' duo seeks revision application on gag order

KUALA LUMPUR: The director and producer of banned controversial indie movie "Mentega Terbang" had yesterday filed a revision application to the High Court on the gag order imposed on them by two magistrate courts.

This came after the magistrate courts had on Wednesday ruled the gag orders on the duo after they were charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code.

Mohd Khairianwar Jailani, 32, and Tan Meng Kheng, 37, were charged with deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of others last year through the movie.

The duo's counsel Zaid Malek said, "The revision seeks to challenge the decision of the magistrates for the gag orders issued against them from discussing or making comments about the case to the media and the public."

"Gag order is wrong at law and breaches freedom of expression."

He added the revision application for Khairianwar,32, has been fixed to hear at the High Court on Jan 24.

On Wednesday, the duo claimed trial to the charge in their roles as producer, director and scriptwriters of the movie before magistrates Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim and Aina Azahra Arifin.

They committed the offence at a unit at Diamond Regency, Jalan Semarak Api 2 at 12.34pm on Feb 26 last year.

It carries jail of up to one year; fine or both.
