Deputy IGP: Nothing wrong with SOP on police recruitment; supervision of cops to prevent misconduct is key

KUALA LUMPUR: The current standard operating procedures (SOP) on the recruitment of police in the country do not need a review.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the force, however, would put more focus on tightening the supervision of personnel following the recent increase in cases involving policemen.

He added that the move will also help to reduce the number of policemen who may have intentions to engage in any misconduct.

"The SOPs are complete, there is no issue with that. The only crucial thing is the supervision aspect which is essential.

"This is because many of these policemen can be influenced by environmental factors such as pressures and challenges upon joining the police force and these factors might tempt them.

"Hence, the most important thing is to have strict supervision... (there are) no issues with the existing SOP for recruitment," he told reporters at federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

Ayob said this when asked whether police have any plans to review the current SOP on the recruitment of policemen.

He added that police were firm in their stance to not tolerate or compromise with any misconduct relating to policemen, regardless of who was involved.

"I have many times stated that we will not tolerate any compromise and misconduct relating to policemen regardless of the percentage involved.

"If there is any involvement, we will detect, apprehend them and present them for court sentencing.

"We will not compromise with any involvement of police officers or personnel and that is clear."
