MACC arrests ex-political secretary, 'Datuk Seri' over alleged ties to corrupt tender awards

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained four businessmen on suspicion of receiving bribes from several companies and contractors that secured tenders in a ministry.

Among the four are a former political secretary to a former minister and a 'Datuk Seri'.

Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted remand for three suspects for four days starting today until Jan 27, while another suspect was remanded for three days until Jan 26.

According to a source, the arrests of the four suspects were made after the main suspect, who previously served as a political secretary to a former minister, allegedly requested and received bribes to ensure that supply tenders in a ministry were awarded to certain contractors.

"All four male suspects are believed to have received bribes from several companies, including contractors who secured work tenders in a ministry from around 2020 to 2021 worth millions of ringgit.

"All suspects were arrested around 7pm to 8.30pm yesterday, with three at the MACC headquarters who had their statements recorded, and another was detained in Shah Alam, Selangor," said the source.

MACC Special Operations Division senior director, Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman confirmed the arrest of all the suspects, and the case is being investigated under Section 16 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

He said that the MACC may also summon several other individuals to provide statements to assist in the investigation.
