Three traffic cops arrested for allegedly soliciting bribe from British couple

IPOH: Three traffic policemen from the state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department here were arrested yesterday for allegedly soliciting RM100 from a famous YouTube couple from the United Kingdom.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan said that police came across the video which had gone viral on social media and confirmed that the incident took place in Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands here.

"The couple is from the United Kingdom and they are on a mission to tour the country. A police report has been received and the case is being investigated by the Ipoh district police headquarters.

"We arrested three traffic policemen believed to be involved in the case for further investigation," he said in a statement today.

Yusri added that the trio, aged between 37 and 42, had been remanded for three days beginning today until Feb 1.

"The investigation papers have been taken by the Bukit Aman Classified Crime Investigation Unit and will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor once the investigation is completed.

"An internal investigation has also been launched by the Bukit Aman Department of Integrity and Standards Compliance," he said.

Yusri added that police had urged the couple to come forward and give their cooperation so that the investigation papers could be completed soon.

He also advised the public not to make any speculation about the case as it could interfere with the investigation.

"Police take seriously the integrity of its force and will not compromise on any misconduct by them," he added.

Earlier, the couple who posted a status on their X account last night said that they had been in contact with the police to assist in investigations.

"Following our video that went viral on YouTube, we have been in contact with the Malaysian police and are helping them with their investigation."

On Sunday, Chris and Marianne Fisher from Shropshire posted on their YouTube channel that they were stopped by traffic police who solicited RM100 from them.

The 51-second video clip, courtesy of an onboard camera, showed the couple stopping their van by the roadside before a traffic policeman appeared at the front driver's window.

Both parties were heard exchanging greetings before the policeman told the couple that they were driving above the speed limit.

The cop was heard telling them that the speed limit was 60kmh while they were travelling at 70.5kmh.

The cop told them that he would issue them a summons and they had to pay it at the police station, to which Marianne agreed. However, the cop then brazenly made them an offer.
