Police reach out to vlogger who paid RM100 to policeman for not wearing crash helmet in Langkawi

ALOR STAR: Police have reached out to a popular foreign vlogger who released a video of a policeman allegedly soliciting a RM100 bribe from him after he was flagged down for committing a traffic offence in Langkawi in November.

Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said police contacted the vlogger, Luke Damant who has since left Malaysia, via email.

"We are locating witnesses to assist in the investigation. The case is being investigated by the federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department.

"Police view the incident seriously and investigations are being carried out under Section 384 of the Penal Code and Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," he said when contacted.

Fisol added that Kedah police, too, take seriously any wrongdoing involving policemen and officers.

He urged those with information on the incident to contact the nearest police station to assist investigations.

Yesterday, it was reported that police were looking into Lamant's video after it went viral on social media.

Langkawi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari was reported as saying that police were gathering information on the alleged incident.

Based on the original video uploaded on Nov 10, 2023, Damant showed that he was flagged down by a policeman for riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet in Langkawi.

The video contained a conversation between him and the policeman who had allegedly asked him to make a payment of RM100 to avoid being taken to the police station.

The video ended with the popular Australian travel vlogger informing viewers that he had proceeded to a back alley to make the payment.
