IPOH: The Perak Immigration Department has detained 95 illegal immigrants in two separate operations carried out in Gopeng and here, yesterday.

Its deputy director, Sharmanrizal Rustam said that among those detained were 51 men, 40 women and four children, comprising citizens from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Laos, Thailand, Philippines and Egypt.

Sharmanrizal said the operations were carried out between 11am and midnight involving 20 immigration officers.

"The raids were conducted at seven garment shops, seven food premises, a car wash, an entertainment outlet, a recreation centre and eight stalls.

"From these raids, 119 individuals were screened and 95 of them were arrested for various offences.

"The identified offences include overstaying, and other violations of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, and Immigration Regulations 1963," he said in a statement.

Sharmanrizal added that he hoped the people would cooperate with the department by making reports or complaints to combat the influx of illegal immigrants in this country.

"The department will also take strict action against employers or individuals who employ or protect illegal immigrants including prosecution in court," he said.
