Unseen eyes: Trafficker caught smuggling cannabis in cross-border sting

KOTA BARU: A Malaysian drug pusher, regularly travelling to the southern part of Thailand to get cannabis supply to sell to addicts in Kelantan, did not expect to be closely watched by the Thai army and other enforcement agencies.

The man has allegedly entered the neighbouring country illegally via an illegal jetty in Rantau Panjang.

A Thai police spokesman said the suspect, from Kelantan, was finally arrested after being under surveillance for a few days.

"A Malaysian man was nabbed in a joint operation between the police and the army manning the Thai/Kelantan borders on Wednesday night.

"Also seized from him was 1,000g of cannabis," said the spokesman.

The spokesman said the man was detained at Sungai Padi sub-province about 8pm (Thailand time).

He said the cannabis was packed into two plastic bags when it was seized, adding that the Malaysian man is being held at the Sungai Golok police station lock-up.

"Thai police believe the cannabis are heading to Kelantan via the many illegal jetties along the border of the two countries," said the spokesman.
