Elderly woman loses RM178,000 in scam by fake philanthropist

SEREMBAN: An elderly woman lost RM178,000 after being scammed through a fake investment scheme that promised handsome returns.

Nilai police chief, Abdul Malik Hasim, said that the woman in her 70s reported receiving a text message from an unknown number claiming to be a well-known philanthropist offering the 'Navicap' investment scheme on Nov 15, 2023.

"The woman subsequently made two transactions totaling RM178,000 to the account provided by the suspect.

"However, the victim failed to withdraw the invested capital and promised profits, as her account was allegedly frozen. Realising she had been deceived, the victim later filed a report at the Mantin police station at 10am today," he said in a statement.

He mentioned that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, and the police are working to locate the suspect for further investigation.
