Maqis foils Myanmar man's attempt to smuggle smoked rats

SEPANG: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department successfully foiled an attempt by a Myanmar man to smuggle in smoked rats at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 here on Monday.

In a statement today, Selangor MAQIS director Mohd Sobri Md Hashim said the smoked rats, weighing 15 kilogrammes (kg), were detected when the baggage of the man, who is in his 30s, was scanned.

"The total seizure, estimated to be worth RM300, was detected with the help of the  Customs Department's scanning machine and with the inspection by Maqis officers," he said.

Mohd Sobri said the act of importing animal products without a permit is an offence under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728), and if found guilty can be prosecuted according to Section 11(3) of the same Act.

He said the individual concerned can be fined not more than RM100,000 or jailed not more than six years or both if convicted. – BERNAMA
