14 nabbed for rioting, assault of man who asked for vehicle to be moved

SEPANG: Police have detained 14 people for rioting and assaulting a man in Dengkil on Saturday, allegedly just because he had asked them to move a vehicle which was blocking the road.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said the 14, aged between 16 and 40, were detained overnight to assist investigations and would be released today on police bail.

"Police are still investigating this case under sections 148 and 506 of the Penal Code, which carry sentences of imprisonment of up to five years, a fine or both, upon conviction," he said.

It is understood that the 10.15pm incident occurred when a lorry driver asked a neighbour, who is also a relative, to move his vehicle which was blocking the road.

Things escalated and a number of people joined in, assaulting the lorry driver, who suffered injuries to his face and body, as well as cuts to his head.

His assailants were said to have used various items to assault him, including motorcycle crash helmets, stones and a mop handle.
