Three nabbed over fight after football match

BUTTERWORTH: Police have detained three men to assist investigation into a fight involving a group of individuals after a football match here.

Video footage of the fight has gone viral on social media since yesterday.

Acting Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Superintendent Siti Noor Salawati Saad said police detained the trio, who are in their 30s and 40s, on Sunday after receiving a report on the incident.

"We came across a viral video footage on social media with regard to a fight involving a group of individuals after a football match. We received a police report from a man on Sunday.

"Following the report, we detained three men to assist in the investigation.

"Checks showed one of the men detained had a previous criminal record," she said today.

Siti Noor Salawati said investigation revealed the fight was a result of dissatisfaction with the referee's decision and there were provocations by both teams.

"We are still tracking down several more individuals, believed to be involved in the incident.

"We urged those with information to come forward to assist in the investigation. They can contact investigating officer Inspector Nursyahirah Sarahani at 04-5762222 ext 2275 or any of the nearest police station," she added.

The case is probed under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

A 41-second video footage has gone viral showing several men chasing one another before exchanging blows.
