Two civil servants jailed and fined for bribery

KOTA KINABALU: Two civil servants were each sentenced to three months' jail and fined RM20,000 or a six-month jail by the Special Corruption Court here for two counts of bribery.

Tonny Ramlee, 44, and Mohamad Nazri Rabani, 42, were found guilty by Sessions Court judge Jason Juga today.

In the first charge, Tonny and Nazri, both assistant enforcement officers of the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry of the Beaufort branch, were found guilty of receiving a RM600 bribe from a convenience shop owner as an inducement not to take action against him for committing an offence under the Price Control Order Regulations 1993.

The offence comes under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

On the second charge, the two were found guilty of soliciting RM600 cash from the same person and for the same purpose at the same time and place.

The offence comes under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

Both charges took place at Jack Trading in Lo Chung Park, Beaufort between 12.25pm and 12.50pm on July 14, 2017.

The court imposed a three-month jail plus a fine of RM10,000 or a three-month jail for each of the charges. The jail sentence is to be run concurrently.

MACC prosecuting officer Dzulkarnain Rousan Hasbi prosecuted and counsel Mohamad Amirul Amin represented both accused.

The prosecution had called 13 witnesses while the defence called two witnesses during the trial.

Nazri paid his fine but Tonny did not.
