Police hunt down trio involved in assault on e-hailing driver

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are currently tracking down three men who assaulted an e-hailing driver in an incident at Taman Bukit Cheras here on Feb 26.

Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Zam Halim Jamaluddin said they discovered a viral video of the incident on social media at 11.30am yesterday.

"Upon review, a four-minute and two-second video depicting three men assaulting an e-hailing driver at 6.30 pm on Feb 26 was found.

"It is understood that prior to the incident, the victim nearly collided with a motorcyclist while attempting to reverse his car.

"The motorcyclist then displayed a middle finger in dissatisfaction before leaving the scene," he said in a statement.

Zam Halim said that a few minutes later, the victim was approached by three local men from a roadside stall who scolded the victim for allegedly behaving rudely towards the motorcyclist.

"All three suspects proceeded to assault and injure the victim. The scuffle was eventually broken up by bystanders at the scene.

"The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code and a detailed investigation is underway to track down the suspects involved in the incident," he said.

He emphasised that any form of violent crime is considered a serious offense and will be thoroughly investigated by the police.

"Members of the public with information regarding the incident can contact the Cheras Police Hotline at 03-92845050 extension 5051, the Kuala Lumpur Police Hotline at 03-21159999, or any nearby police station," he said.
