Ex-Miros director fined RM48,000 for falsifying documents

SHAH ALAM: A former Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) director was fined RM48,000 by the Sessions Court here in default of four months imprisonment for falsifying documents.

Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud handed down the sentence after Datuk Dr Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, 48, pleaded guilty to four alternative charges of forgery.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Khairil was initially charged with forging tender documents from four companies for the supply of vehicles under Section 468 of the Penal Code.

The section relates to the forging documents for cheating, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.

For the first charge, he was alleged to have forged tender documents from Bright Ability Sdn Bhd for the procurement of two Suzuki Carry 600 cc and two Cherry Transcab 1.1 litre pickup trucks from Thailand.

For the second, third, and fourth charges, he was alleged to have forged documents for the same vehicles from three respective companies; Perantice Land Sdn Bhd; Tanjung Nova Sdn Bhd; and Winntrack Auto.

Today, the trial judge heard the outcome of representation whereby the prosecution agreed to offer four alternative charges under Section 471 of the Penal Code for the use of a document that has been forged.

Section 471 carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment and a fine or both.

Khairil then pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Fadhly Mohd Zamry prosecuted the case while the accused.
