Model accused of killing boyfriend claims to be suffering from bipolar disorder [NSTTV]

KUALA LANGAT: A part-time model was today charged with killing her photographer boyfriend last week.

A Tamilselvi, 26 was accused of killing V Gawsigan, 26, at a residence on Jalan Flora 3D/6, in Telok Panglima Garang, at 5.30am on March 11.

The former medical student was charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death sentence upon conviction.

Tamilselvi - who was clad in a purple lock-up garb, nodded to indicate she understood the charge after it was read and explained to her by a court interpreter at the Telok Datok Magistrate's Court here.

However, no plea was recorded from the accused, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

In today's proceedings, lawyer Ethan Tan - who represented the accused, requested that his client be referred to a psychiatric hospital for her to undergo a mental examination.

Tan said he was informed that his client suffered from bipolar disorder and seemed unable to comprehend when she was told about the incident.

Tan also said that his client has a heart condition and requires a medical device to regulate her heartbeat.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Khadijah Amir Hamzah did not offer any bail as the case falls under the non-bailable provision.

She said that no documents were submitted by the defence to confirm the accused's bipolar disorder claim and heart condition.

After hearing arguments from both sides, magistrate Maslinda Selamat rejected the defence's application.

She said the defence should submit documents related to the mental and physical health of the accused at the next mention date before the application can be considered.

The court also set April 25 for the next mention date and for toxicology, forensic, chemical, and medical reports.

It was reported that Gawsigan was fatally stabbed as wounds were found on his left wrist and left leg believed to be inflicted by a knife.

The suspect was successfully apprehended by police at the Cyberjaya Hospital shortly after the incident.

Kuala Langat police chief Superintendent Ahmad Ridhwan Mohd Nor @ Saleh said they received a report at 9.41am from a doctor at Cyberjaya Hospital, informing them that a patient had been admitted in an unconscious state.

The complainant administered emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 30 minutes but received no response and found no pulse from the victim.

Tamilselvi was arrested at the hospital premises by the district Criminal Investigation Division.

Ahmad Ridhwan said initial investigations revealed that the cause of the incident was jealousy.

"She believed the victim had been unfaithful to her," he said in a statement.
