7 people linked to Israeli man still in remand, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven people linked to the Israeli man who was arrested with six guns and over 150 bullets in his possession are still in remand.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said six others arrested over the case have been released on bail pending the completion of the police's probe.

Earlier today, the Israeli, Shalom Avitan pleaded not guilty to two charges of possessing 158 bullets and trafficking six firearms.

Avitan, who entered the country on a French passport, was arrested in a hotel room in Jalan Ampang last month with firearms and bullets.

"Even though he has been charged, investigations are ongoing to determine the real motive (for possessing the guns and bullets) because there are still suspects who have yet to be arrested who can assist in this probe," he said when contacted.

Razarudin said Avitan would be held in custody pending the completion of the trial as possession and trafficking of firearms was a non-bailable offence.

If found guilty, Avitan be sentenced to death or given life imprisonment.

Avitan entered the country on March 12 via a flight from the United Arab Emirates and is believed to have come to Malaysia to kill the head of a rival criminal family.

Following his arrest, police also nabbed a husband and wife, suspected of supplying the firearms to Avitan.

The couple, Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin, 41, and her husband Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, 43, were charged at the Klang Sessions Court last Friday.

In total, 16 people have been arrested in connection with the case.
