Two cops facing probe over alleged extortion assigned to desk duty, says Johor CPO

JOHOR BARU: Two policemen detained to assist in investigations into alleged extortion at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar reported for duty today at the Johor Baru (South) district police headquarters.

Their remand order expired today (April 22). They have been assigned to desk-bound duties.

Johor police chief Commissioner M. Kumar confirmed that the duo had reported for duty.

"A request to suspend the policemen has been submitted to Bukit Aman.

"There have been two extortion allegations filed against them and I take this matter seriously.

"I had recommended that they be suspended until investigations are concluded before the next course of action is to be taken.

"If they are innocent of the charges, then we will welcome them back…it's a suspension not termination," Kumar clarified.

It is learnt that Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) has yet to issue a suspension order.

Without the order, the policemen are required to report for duty.

According to police protocol, only the federal police headquarters has the authority to suspend or terminate policemen.

However, respective state contingent police chiefs can submit their recommendations.

On April 5, the two policemen aged 33 and 34, stationed at the BSI were detained for allegedly extorting RM2,000 from a man.

A 50-year-old man had also claimed the same officers extorted RM1,000 from him on Jan 4.
