Cyber Security Act could be tabled in next parliament session

JOHOR BARU: The draft of the Cyber Security Act has been submitted to Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali and is expected to be tabled in the next parliament sitting.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the tabling of the proposed act reflected the government's seriousness in tackling issues related to cyber security. He said the act would allow for law enforcement to be carried out on matters related to cyber crime.

"We have discussed with the Attorney-General for a specific act, the draft of which has been submitted yesterday to the Attorney-General.

"The draft for the Cyber Security Act will be scrutinised by the Attorney-General's Chambers for it to be tabled in the next parliament sitting," Zahid told reporters after visiting the Sultan Iskandar Building Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex here today.

Zahid said the government is serious about cyber security as it is closely related to the tasks of agencies which monitor various types of crime.

"It is included in the jurisdiction of enforcement agencies that monitor any recruitment related to terrorists, or funds that came from domestic or foreign sources used for terrorism, or those involved in the Anti Money-Laundering Act (AMLA), and other offences such as online gambling," he said.

Zahid said, following the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) meeting he chaired yesterday, Cyber Security Malaysia revealed that an average of 10,000 complaints per year were lodged related to violations under the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission Act, Sedition Act and Defamation Act.

He said Cyber Security Malaysia or CSM will be placed under the National Security Council to centralise enforcement of cyber security matters.
