Fake 'Harumanis': Perlis to work with Domestic Trade Ministry to monitor traders

KANGAR: Perlis government will work with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to monitor traders who are deceiving consumers into buying 'fake' Harumanis mangoes.

The state Agriculture and Agro-based Committee chairman Ahmad Bakri Ali said the government is aware that there are some unscrupulous traders who are selling other mango varieties at a premium by claiming it to be the iconic 'Harumanis'.

"Some of them are placing misleading labels on the mangoes, leading to consumers, in particular those from outside Perlis to believe that they are buying Harumanis mangoes.

"This is jeopardising the good name (of Perlis and Harumanis mangoes) and we are urging the traders to be ethical in plying their trade," he said in responding to a question from Mohd Shukri Ramli (PAS-Sanglang) at the state legislative assembly meeting today.

Ahmad Bakri also told the assembly that the floor price of Harumanis mangoes for this year has been fixed at RM26 per kilogramme.

“There is no plan to set a ceiling price for the Harumanis mangoes as it depends on the supply and demand and I am informed that some are being sold up to between RM38 and RM45 per kilogramme." he said.
