GEORGETOWN: The Education Ministry is studying a proposal of using cashless transactions in schools.
Its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the ministry has received the proposal from Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd (Angkasa).
Mahdzir said as Angkasa is the National Co-operative Movement of Malaysia, it also covers the co-ops in schools.
"They are proposing a cashless transaction in schools similar to that of a debit card," he said adding parents could top-up the credit amount in the cards and the students would be able to use it in their respective schools.
Mahdzir added the matter is now being studied at the ministry and there will be trials done in schools.
Angkasa president Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah said they have submitted documents on the cashless payment system which he hopes could be implemented soon.
"Four companies have submitted their working papers to Angkasa to be brought to the Education Ministry. I will meet with the Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid to obtain his agreement to implement the system," he said.
Abdul Fattah had said through this system, students no longer need to carry cash on them and at the same time, the card could also be used for record management purposes such as students’ attendance and library borrowing records.
