PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry plans to facilitate the move by schools to allow students to use their personal electronic devices in the classroom for the purpose of learning and doing school work.
Echoing a recent call by Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, it's director-general, Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof, said that as a first move, the ministry will help schools encourage teaching and learning via electronic gadgets.
"As much we want to provide each student with a gadget, (certain policies would make doing so at the moment difficult).
"For now, we will allow students to bring their own gadgets, with their parents’ permission. (We will provide guidelines on how they can use) the gadgets in the classroom," Dr Khair told reporters after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Education Ministry and the Tourism and Culture Ministry, in conjunction with the ‘Negaraku Arts Competition’ programme today.
Yesterday, Mahdzir said the ministry’s proposal to allow students to use electronic gadgets in school – which will be presented soon – is in line with current technological developments.
Dr Khair said the ministry's working committee will convene for an operational meeting tomorrow to discuss the proposal.
"Although the research into this study will be completed two months (from now), we want to implement it as soon as possible," he added.
As of now, there are no rulings to allow students to bring any form of electronic gadgets to school, Khair affirmed.
