Pas balks at "arrogant" label for telling other parties to step aside for GE14

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas' firm stand in defending its principles is a mark of dignity, not arrogance, Pas information director Ahmad Amzad Hashim said in a statement, today.

He was responding to former Pas vice-president, Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who had labelled the party "arrogant" for calling on other opposition parties to step aside in the upcoming general election (GE14) so that it can challenge Umno in a straight fight.

Ahmad Amzad added that although 64 per cent of Malaysians are Muslim, it seems as if they “need to get permission from non-Muslims on Islamic affairs”.

"Now in politics, Muslims are affected by the trends of liberalism, secularism, pluralism, feminism and the LGBT movement under the (pretext) of intellectual freedom.

"These will lead Muslims to accept Pakatan Harapan, whose direction, controlled by the DAP, is clearly anti-Islamic.

"The DAP wants to impose its version of Islam (on the country), like how it does in Penang, where (Islamic policies) need the approval of the state executive council, which is comprised of three Muslims and seven non-Muslims, and chaired by DAP itself," he said.

Ahmad Amzad added that based on its behaviour, Pakatan seems to have taken the same stand as the DAP.

He said Pas should not bow down as an Islamic party, which is the hope of Muslims in Malaysia.

Likening the DAP to Jakarta’s outgoing Christian governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Ahmad Amzad said it is every Muslim's responsibility not to allow the religion to get bullied.

On Sunday, Pas Ulama information chief Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali was reported as "ordering" all opposition parties not to contest in 80 of their choice seats in the GE14, to avoid three-cornered fights against Umno.
