Food stall helper gets 13 years jail for supporting, possessing IS related materials

KUALA LUMPUR: A food stall assistant was today sentenced to 13 years' jail by the High Court on three counts of terror-related charges.

Judge Datuk Nordin Hassan sentenced Azizi Abdullah, 21, to jail for knowingly supporting the act of terrorism which involved the use of explosives, with intent to further an ideology and threaten public order via Telegram application on his mobile phone between March 25 and June 29, last year.

He was charged with being in possession an item related to terror activity and the Islamic State (IS) terror group at noon on June 29, 2016.

Azizi also admitted to possessing terror-related and IS images on his mobile phone at the same time and day and was sentenced to four years, for each charge.

All the three offences were allegedly committed at F15, Kg Baru Lubok Buntar, Serdang in Bandar Baru, Kedah.

Azizi, in seeking a lenient custodial sentence said he had regretted his actions and requested that sentences for all the three offences, to run concurrently.

Deputy public prosecutor Azlina Rasdi said the accused had committed serious offences.

"He was also an active participant in the Telegram group and had supported acts of terrorism."

Nordin ordered the sentences to run concurrently from Azizi's date of arrest, June 29, last year.
