Over 10k schools have 2Mbps-15Mbps internet speeds: Education Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 10,182 schools nationwide have been supplied with internet broadband speeds of between 2Mbps and 15Mbps, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon said today.

Of the total number of schools, 7,050, or 69.24 per cent, are located in the suburbs of major cities.

"In line with the seventh thrust of the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025, the ministry is working together with the Communications and Multimedia Ministry to identify the most optimal approach to (upgrading) broadband speeds at all schools – including those in suburban and rural areas – to high-speed broadband.

"Aside from that, the ministry is also taking steps to improve user experience through a steady scheduling of broadband usage, as well as providing cache facilities in schools where broadband speeds have yet to be upgraded," he told the Dewan Negara today.

Chong was replying to a question from Senator Datuk Abidullah Salleh, who asked about internet reach percentage and broadband speeds at schools througout Malaysia, especially those in rural areas.

Abidullah also asked if the the statistics are in line with the seventh thrust of the blueprint, which is to utilise information and communication technology (ICT) to improve the quality of learning.
