Promising UMT student run over by bus, university "saddened"

MARANG: A Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) student was killed after the motorcycle she was riding was struck and run over by a bus at Km15 of the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan road near Kampung Rhu Rendang here, yesterday.

In the incident at around 6.20pm, Amira Farhana Abdul Rahman, 24, lost control of her motorcycle at a traffic light junction, strayed into the path of the bus and was run over.

State Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department chief Supt Abd Razak Hasan said the victim succumbed to serious head injuries at the scene, and her remains were sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital’s forensic unit for a post-mortem.

"The victim was on her way from Dungun to UMT’s campus after visiting her family at 5pm,” said Abd Razak.

Meanwhile, UMT vice chancellor Prof Datuk Nor Aeini Mokhtar said the university was very saddened by the tragedy.

She said Amira was a Food Science (Food Technology) undergraduate who excelled in her studies and was involved in many in voluntary activities

UMT presented RM1,000 from its condolence fund, RM1,000 from its Students Welfare Fund and RM10,000 in insurance, to Amira’s family.

"The Terengganu Menteri Besar's Office, through Yayasan Terengganu, also offered their deepest condolences and donated a sum to the victim's family," Nor Aeini added. -- BERNAMA
