MCMC only regulates, not spy on social media users, says Salleh

KUCHING: Communications and Multimedia Ministry today refuted a message circulating via WhatsApp alleging that Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is monitoring all conversations taking place in the mobile messaging application.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak described the chain message as "fake news".

"The MCMC is a regulatory body and the commission has no involvement any activities of spying conversations within WhatsApp groups or other social media platforms.

"Hence, beware of fake news," he told reporters at the Asean International Film Festival and Awards (AIFFA) 2017 Biz World ceremony here today.

He, however, reminded all social media and mobile messaging applications users to be wise and adhere to the regulations and requirements of the law.

"Everyone is entitled to freedom to speech and write.

"Having said that, we should not abuse such rights by spreading false informations and stories via the social media.

"Spreading fake news will only create unnecessary panic towards the country's security," he said.
