Mortar round found at Customs Dept complex likely meant for training: Cops

PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating how a mortar round ended up at the Customs Department's complex in Kelana Jaya near here today.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said the mortar, which was deemed inert, was most probably meant for training purposes.

"It is a real mortar round but the inside is empty. We are still checking how it got there," he said.

Yesterday, a resident in one of the blocks found a blue object, believed to be a mortar round, in a water metre room of the Customs Department living complex.

Police were alerted dispatched a bomb squad to check on the object, at about 10.30am.

The device was later deemed harmless.
