Janda Baik tragedy: Dead UiTM student identified, another found alive

BENTONG: The university student killed when a tree fell on her and several others at the Lata Charok waterfall, Janda Baik near here today, has been identified as Noorain Mohtar, 23.

Noorain, from UiTM Puncak Alam, Selangor, died on the spot, while several others were injured in the 4am incident which occurred while the group was taking part in a survival exercise.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the victim's body was sent to the Bentong Hospital, and that family members have been informed.

Noorain, along with 139 students and four lecturers from the campus, were participating in the exercise when they were suddenly struck by the falling tree.

Five victims were sent to the Bentong Hospital, while another, who suffered serious injuries, was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Muhamad Kamil Md Sukri, 22, who was earlier reported missing following the incident, was found pinned to the ground by large branches.

Bentong Fire and Rescue department chief Zainal Abidin Nong Chik said the department has not yet received updates on the injured victims’ conditions.
