No problem: Sarawak govt untroubled by DAP rep's disqualification from state assembly

JOHOR BARU: Sarawak's Barisan Nasional-led government isn't troubled by the disqualification of Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon from the state assembly.

Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Abang Openg said the matter involving Dr Ting, who is a first-term DAP assemblyman, was not a problem for the state government.

"There is no problem. No problem at all," said Abang Johari when asked to comment on the ministerial motion that was accepted at the Sarawak legislative assembly on Friday to disqualify Dr Ting as a member of the state legislature.

Abang Johari was speaking to reporters after launching a Gawai Dayak celebration at the Pasar Borneo in Taman Kota Putri, Masai tonight.

Abang Johari did not entertain any further questions.

The motion to disqualify Dr Ting was tabled by State International Trade and E-Commerce Minister, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, following allegations that Dr Ting had dual citizenship and that he had been declared a bankrupt twice in Australia in 2012.

Seventy state assemblymen had voted in favour of the motion against Dr Ting, while 10 others voted otherwise.

His disqualification was based on Article 17(1)(g) of the State Constitution of Sarawak.

Earlier, Abang Johari had presented a RM50,000 contribution from the Sarawak government to Johor Borneo Association chairman Donny Linan, to aid in their activities, including organising the weekly market which was mostly set up by the Sarawakian community here.

"I am confident Sarawakians in Johor feel at home here and I hope relations between Sarawak and Johor will be closer through various activities," said Abang Johari in his speech.

Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Md Jais Sarday represented Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin at the event.
