Unimap lecturer's Sakura photo is top winner in contest

ALOR STAR: A Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap) lecturer beats more than 1,500 participants to become the grand prize winner of the Tourism Malaysia Kedah “Sakura Blossom in Kedah Smartphone Photo Contest 2017”.

Mohd Khairulnizam Zahari, 29, from Mergong took the winning shot at Sungai Kedah near the Kota Setar health clinic here on March 19.

The photo of him standing at the railing next to pink Tecoma flowers covering the river surface, won him a three-day and two-night holiday package at the Gunung Jerai Resort.

Khairulnizam received the prize from Kedah Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Rawi Abd Hamid this morning.

“The photo was the only entry that I submitted for the contest. I took it with the help from my younger sister,” he said.

Khairulnizam who stayed in Korea for five years when studying Mechanical Engineering described Tecoma flowers in Kedah as unique as the Sakura flowers in Korea.

Meanwhile, Rawi said the state planned to expand the photo contest by introducing new categories and bigger prizes next year.

“This is the third year Tourism Malaysia organised the contest and we hope more people will participate next year by introducing new categories for professional photographers and students,” he said.
